Hosting a successful Invictus Games Toronto 2017 is one goal for the event coming to Toronto between September 23 – 30. 2017. Another goal is being able to quantify the impact that participation in the Invictus Games has on competitors and their families. It is this second goal where CIMVHR (Canadian Institute for Military Veteran Health and Research) researcher Celina Shirazipour’s work comes into play.
In this fascinating podcast, we talk about Celina’s start as an athlete, her interest in books and learning and her path to becoming a researcher. The Invictus Games Toronto 2017 announced in November 2016, that it would fund a research study by Dalhousie University and CIMVHR researcher Celina Shirazipour. The study is examining the role of adaptive sport in the rehabilitation of ill and injured military personnel and their families, through a comprehensive evaluation of the competitors participating in the upcoming Invictus Games, which will be held in Toronto in September 2017.
Celina’s aim in proposing this independent study was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of adapted sport participation in promoting well-being for military service members and Veterans, specifically in relation to the Invictus Games. The various studies within this project will target different aspects relevant to a competitor’s sports participation.
